There were five tribes of the Caddo Indians, the Adais, Natchitoches, Doustioni, Quachita, and Yatcisi, living in northwest Louisiana at the time of European contact, and today only one of these tribes, the Adais still exists as an identifiable group

Following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, France’s official ties with the Indian Nations of Louisiana came to an end. In 2001, the Adai Caddo Indian Nation and France reestablished formal government-to-government relations.
Following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, France’s official ties with the Indian Nations of Louisiana came to an end. Nearly two centuries later, in 2001, France initiated communications with the Adai Caddo Indian Nation to reestablish government-to-government relations.
18th century silver medal recognizing the Adai Caddo Nation as an ally of Spain. Today, the Adai Caddo Indian Nation is the only Indian Nation in all of western and northern Louisiana to have received the King of Spain’s Al Mérito medal—a tangible symbol of a centuries-old alliance.
2013 Spain and the Adai Caddo continue to retain government-to-government relations honoring their centuries old relationship started in the seventeenth century.
